Pamela Sistrunk
Spinner & Weaver
Pamela Sistrunk is a Textile Artisan and has been designing throws, scarves and beanés for over 30 years predominantly through the medium of knitting. She discovered the joy of weaving and spinning during the last 3 years and has been astonished and delighted with how beautiful woven garments can turn out. Pamela has an avid interest in designing and creating garments directly from the animal to the spinning wheel, to the weaving loom or knitting needles.
Pamela initially knitted for friends and relatives but after hearing their comments and the fact they always asked for more and more, she decided to try a cottage industry and Wild Yarns was born.
As Pamela has a military background in the Australian Army, she approached the National Anzac Centre in Albany, to do a tribute for our Anzac soldiers and nurses who were at Gallipoli. They were very receptive and so she developed two more ranges for Wild Yarns which are Anzac Heroes (Soldiers) and Anzac Angels (Nurses) which are now stocked in The Fort Store at the National Anzac Centre Albany and have become very successful.
Wild Yarns now presents 5 different ranges:-
• Anzac Heroes
• Anzac Angels
• Outback
• Hippies
• Vikings
Pamela likes to design garments that are unusual using different types of yarns so that they have a soft feel to them and are interesting. It is important that the garment is beautiful but it must also be functional. Pamela also likes to source local yarn and fleece from all over Australia where possible and strives to support and push ethical bespoke artisan produced textiles forward. The beauty of obtaining a hand knitted or woven article is that it can be designed for your personally, you just need to express what you would like and Pamela can design it for you.
As a textile artisan, Pamela feels it is important to keep up the tradition of knitting, weaving and spinning and Wild Yarns became the vehicle which provides this through meaningful and sustainable work and the preservation of crafts which can be handed down, generation to generation.
Pamela is very happy to be a part of the Mundaring Hills Open Studios this year and hopes that she will be a part of this venture for many years to come.
